Since ALTO presented Council with its High-Speed Rail Project proposal in December of 2025, Council and Staff have been reviewing the limited available information to determine the anticipated impacts of this project.  The Township’s “Working Group” presented a report to Council on February 17th, 2026, outlining a number of concerns.

MP Scott Reid has been vocal about his objection to the Alto High-Speed Rail Project and is requesting residents and property owners to sign his e-petition to “cease further advancement of the Alto high-speed rail project, and redirect federal investment toward improving higher-frequency passenger rail service within existing corridors”. This petition is open for signatures until May 28th, 2026.

Council for the Township of Montague is opposed to the High-Speed Rail Project. Information provided to date demonstrates that this estimated $90 billion project will result in land expropriation, fractured communities, and reduce opportunities for housing development.
