Solar Eclipse 2024

Written by

Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024:

On Monday, April 8, 2024, the Moon’s orbit will position it directly between the Earth and the Sun, causing a solar eclipse.

While other areas will experience a total eclipse, in Smiths Falls, the eclipse will not be total -- the maximum will be approximately 99 per cent occurring for approximately 5 minutes starting at 3:20pm. Because there is no total eclipse there is no safe time to look at the Sun without appropriate eye protection.

What are the health risks?

Vision impairment/eye damage:

Looking directly at the Sun at any time without protection may cause damage to your retina (the light-receptor tissue at the back of your eye) called “Solar Retinopathy / Retinal Burns / Eclipse Blindness.” Damage can occur without any sensation of pain. The injury can be temporary or permanent.

When is the risk? Looking at the Sun at any time is dangerous.

Who is at risk? Anyone who looks at the Sun at any time or during the eclipse (because it is not total) without appropriate eye protection is at risk.

Sunburn/sun damage to skin:

Watching the progress of an eclipse may mean you are in direct sunlight for a long period of time. Prevent skin damage by wearing sunscreen, a hat, and protective clothing.

How can I best protect myself?

The best way to protect yourself from harm is to not look at the sun at any point during the solar eclipse.

However, if you do wish to view the eclipse, there are ways to reduce your risks.

You can wear approved eye protection (ISO Standard 12312-2:2015 solar filters that have the manufacturer's name and address printed on the product). If you wear eyeglasses, place your eclipse glasses over them or place the eclipse viewer in front of them.

Remember to always supervise children while using solar filters

Never look at the Sun (eclipsed or otherwise) through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical device even if you are wearing approved eye protection. The concentrated solar rays will burn through your eye-protection filter and enter your eye(s), causing serious injury. Optical instruments require their own special solar filters.

If appropriate eye protection is not available, you can view the solar eclipse safely online via a livestream.

Andrewsville Bridge

Written by

The Counties of Lanark and Leeds Grenville have retained Jewell Engineering to prepare a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) report to evaluate alternatives to address the deteriorating condition of the Andrewsville Bridge over the Rideau River, located in the hamlet of Andrewsville about 5 km north of the Village of Merrickville. Andrewsville bridge is designated as a boundary bridge, therefore it is jointly maintained by the County of Lanark and the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville.

During the Regular Meeting of Council on October 4, 2022, a resolution was passed that the Reeve and Deputy Reeve are to provide notice to both Counties, all lower-tier Municipalities within the Counties, and the local MP and MPP that the Township of Montague is in support of keeping the Andrewsville Bridge open to traffic and not decommissioning the bridge.

Concerned residents may keep up with developments to the future of the bridge by visiting the following County sites:

Rosedale Hall

Written by

OTF Logo Vert ColourCCRF

The Hall and Park area is used by a variety of community organizations and members for meetings, celebrations and fundraisers. And thanks to the $143,500 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation in June of 2023, people of all abilities will be able to access the building and the park area.

Previous funding was received from OTF in 2018 to put in the current play structure and upgrade the interior of the Hall. The Township wanted to grow off the previous grant and make the play area and parking more accessible to everyone, so the parking lot was pulverized, new granular base and new asphalt was placed, along with a paved pathway to the play structure. An accessible swing has been installed and a small area for basketball. Funding was received through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund for the installation of public Wi-Fi, a generator and chain link fencing around the playground areas.

It is very important for Council and Staff that we grow in an inclusive and accessible direction for all. These grants have allowed needed renovations to be made.

This wheelchair-accessible community hall located at 657 Rosedale Road South in Smiths Falls, and is available for the public to rent.
